Honors:

  • 2008 NCBWA Pro-Line Athletic National Hitter of the Week (February 23)

Strengths:
2008 may have been Year of the First Baseman (when seven were selected in the first round), but Dustin Ackley is trying to extend the trend into 2009.  He enters his junior season as the top college position player in the country.  His bat is unparalleled in college baseball.  He makes consistent contact and he hits for average and power to all fields.  At Maryland last March, he showed a compact swing and great strength to go 2-3 with a home run, 4 RBIs and 3 BBs.  He is also an above-average runner.

Weaknesses:
Ackley has been hampered by an arm injury at North Carolina and now that he’s healthy, he’s moving to centerfield.  It’s unclear whether he’ll be considered a pro prospect at that position.  If he’s considered a first-baseman, there will be more pressure on him to excel at the plate.

The Future:
Top ten picks.
