Less than two hours before the signing deadline, the Reds have inked their first round pick, Miami first baseman Yonder Alonso to a major league deal worth $4.5 million. Alonso was selected seventh overall in the June draft. The contract is worth nearly double the Major League Baseball recommended bonus for the seventh pick.
Alonso hit .370/.534/.777 with 24 home runs and 72 RBI for the Hurricanes in 2008. He led Division I in walks (76), finished fifth in on-base percentage (.534) and sixth in home runs (24). We ranked him 27th in our pre-draft rankings.
There are still nine first round picks who have not signed with less than ten minutes until the deadline.
