Royals sign Melville

The first signing of this August 15 signing deadline was not a first round pick, but a first round talent nonetheless.  The Royals signed their fourth round pick, high school pitcher Tim Melville, to a minor league contract with a $1.25 million bonus.  Melville’s bonus is more than four times the recommended value set by Major League Baseball and is amore than any other signed draft pick outside the first round.

Melville was considered one of the best high school arms in the draft before a disappointing season and high bonus demands caused his stock to fall.  When he’s at his best, Melville has two plus pitches: a fastball that reaches 94 mph and an above-average curveball.  We ranked him as the 32nd prospect in the draft and the second best high school pitcher behind Twins’ first-rounder Aaron Hicks.

You can expect a lot more action as we approach the midnight ET signing deadline.  We’ll keep you updated on all the late news.
