Here’s another report that I’ve written from watching a game on local TV. The Volunteers traveled to Auburn, Alabama to play a conference series. Saturday’s game was broadcast locally. Redshirt-freshman Bryan Morgado flashed a plus fastball and two other quality pitches but was hit hard and left in the fifth inning having given up four runs (four earned). He was matched by another freshman, Auburn lefty Cory Luckie, who is a finesse lefty with a plus curve and a solid changeup and gave up four runs (four earned) over six innings. Tennessee tied the score in the sixth with three runs. The score was 4-4 after nine innings. First baseman Jeff Lockwood had a two RBI single in the 11th inning and freshman P.J. Polk hit a two run homer, the first of his career, to extend the lead. The final score was 8-4.
Auburn starts four freshman, but junior Mike Bianucci is the team’s best prospect and he hit 2-5 with one strikeout. Shortstop Matt Hall is another solid prospect, and he went 1-5 with a triple, a run scored and two strikeouts. Tennessee’s win is owed to their big sixth and eleventh innings and the clutch pitching of reliever Danny Wiltz, who threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings relieving Morgado.
