Scouting report: Clemson vs. Maryland

Friday night’s game in College Park was a pitcher’s duel between two elite pitcher.  Junior righty D.J. Mitchell scattered five hits over eight plus innings and only gave up one run (unearned).  He was matched by sophomore Scott Swinson, a transfer from George Washington.  Swinson gave up one earned run in six innings.

Clemson scored its first run in the top of the first inning and increased its lead when Doug Hogan scored on Kyle Parker’s two-out single.  With the score 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Mitchell walked catcher Chad Durakis.  After Gerry Spessard singled, Mitchell threw away Nick Jowers’ sacrifice bunt, allowing A.J. Casario, who pinch ran for Durakis, to score.  Relievers Casey Harman and Matt Vaughn proceeded to retire the final three batters with the tying and winning runs in scoring position.
