Strengths:
Alvarez has plus power, good plate discipline and the ability to hit the ball to all fields. At third base, he’s got solid hands and decent range. He’s an average runner.
Weaknesses:
He’s thick for a third baseman and may have to move to first base as a pro.
The Future:
UPDATE (4/28): ESPN.com’s Keith Law is reporting that Alvarez is looking for a bonus north of $8 million. (Alvarez denies this rumor.) If true, the bonus would be the largest in MLB draft history. Alvarez is a Boras client, which could steer him to Baltimore. The O’s have the fourth pick and signed another Boras client to a draft-record bonus in 2007.
