Honors:
- 2008 NCBWA Pre-season First-team All-American
- 2008 Brooks Wallace Watch List
Strengths:
Thompson anchors a Virginia staff that was the best in the ACC last season. He’s put together two impressive seasons and showed improvement in his sophomore season. (I saw him scatter four hits in six innings against GW last February.) He works off a low 90s fastball and plus curve. He also throws a slider and a change. At 6-foot-6, he offers plenty of projectability.
Weaknesses:
Thompson is in a second tier of college pitchers behind Brian Matusz or Aaron Crow. If his stuff doesn’t improve, he will be a back of the rotation starter.
The Future:
Mid-first round selection.
