Honors:
- 2007 All-Valley Scholar-Athlete First Team
- 2006 Valley Pitcher of the Year
- 2006 Valley Freshman of the Year
Strengths:
Shafer had a strong freshman year, earning the Freshman of the Year award in the Missouri Valley Conference.he throws a 91-94 mph fastball and a plus changeup. His curve is also a solid offering.
Weaknesses:
Shafer’s career has been marked by injuries. In 2006, he suffered a back injury that held him out of the Cape Cod summer league. In 2007, he missed a month with elbow stiffness. He was only throwing in the high 80s in the summer of 2007 but scouts expect him to regain his old velocity. Even when healthy, he’s no more than a #3 starter in the big leagues.
The Future:
If he proves his health, he could be drafted at the end of the first round.
